Trustee & Country Director – Indian Subcontinent
Born in Bangalore, India, Ganesh studied at the University of Mysore in India and in 1948 obtained his Batchelor of Science Degree with first Class Honours. He taught in the university for a year before entering the Medical College in Mysore, India, passing out with honours as the best outgoing student in December 1954. He worked as a House officer in K.R. Hospital, Mysore (a teaching hospital) for twenty months before coming to UK in Oct 1956. After working in different hospitals in South Wales for 2 years he specialised in Paediatrics and settled in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales in Jan 1959. where he worked in the paediatric department of the Merthyr & Aberdare group of hospitals for 10 years before entering general practice in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. He retired in 1997 as senior partner and trainer in general practice. Ganesh married Myra, a nurse whom he had met while working at Port Talbot General Hospita and they have 4 grown up children and 6 grand children.He has lived on his own since Myra’s death in 1999. He is fully involved in the local community, at various times as Vice chairman of the local branch of Cancer Research Campaign, medical officer of local amateur boxing clubs, Chairman of the local flower festival for National Childrens’ Homes, Governor of Cyfarthfa High School, Serving Officer of St.John’s Ambulance Brigade and currently vice-chairman of The Trustee Board of Merthyr Tydfil Citizen’s Advice Bureau. At various times he has been a member of different craft committees such as the Mid Glamorgan Family Practitioner Committee, District Medical Committee, Local Medical Committee, Child Protection Committee and Primary Health Care Team for Paediatrics. he is a member of BRITISH MENSA. Ganesh joined The Rotary Club of Merthyr Tydfil in 1974, served as its president in 1982-83. He was International Service Chairman for RI Dist 1150 for 3 years before serving as District Governor in 1990-91. Since then he has served as Chairman of RIBI International Service Committee, 1993-94 and on several RI committees and task forces and as the Representative of RI President to District Conferences. He was the District’s delegate to the Council on Legislation in 1998 & 2001. He also belongs to the Cadre of Technical Advisors to The Rotary Foundation. Ganesh joined The Rotary Jaipur Limb Project as a manager in 1997 and became one of its trustees a couple of years later and is currently Co-Ordinator of RJLP projects on the Indian sub-continent. He travels extensively in India to initiate, visit and take part in several Jaipur limb projects and had the honour of being presented to His Holiness The Dalai Lama at the opening of The permanent Jaipur Limb Centre in Dharmasala, India.
