Rotary Limb Camps in Kerala, February 2013
Project manager Rotarian Peter Swinscoe travelled to Kerala in February 2013, where he attended the Limb Camp at Trivandrum, conducted jointly by the Rotary Club of Trivandrum Central and MUKTIINDIA. As anticipated there were over 200 beneficiaries of the camp. This is his report.
The intention had originally been to hold a mega camp, but since MUKTI were unable to conduct the single camp, Trivandrum Central shared the camp with Quilon South. The total approved cost was paid direct to MUKTI by RJLP. The Maharajah of Kerala, who had opened the previous camp in 2012, gave his full support to the project, but as he is now 91 years of age, sent the Minister of Health to do the honours this year. The Rotary Club of Trivandrum Central provided excellent publicity for the camp in their club magazine, and the Rotaract clubs in the Trivandrum locality were of great help. As result of the camp, 12 new members joined the Trivandrum club.
PDG Scaria from the Rotary Club of Changanacherry in District 3211, and who is one of RJLP greatest supporters, would like to hold Limb Camps at the following locations during the Rotary year 2013-14: Vaikom (near Cochin); Changanacherry; Trivandrum (the most southerly) and Quilon. These locations are widely spread over Kerala. THis would result in much publicity for Rotary and RJLP, and judging by the success at Trivandrum, it would be very likely that many new Rotarians would be recruited.
Another avid supporter of RJLP, Past President Jacob Roy of the Kunnamkulam Club, would like to repeat previous successes and run a Limb Camp at a location removed from his club location. He also happens to be the World President of the Alzheimers Society, travelling all over the world in this capacity, and wherever he goes he mentions RJLP.
